Astrology – Judging by Mahadasha part1

This is one of the most important chapter dealing with timing of the events. We will be covering this topic in parts as it is quite huge. As mentioned earlier astrology can never be mastered only by reading about it. It can be mastered only by experiencing it. Start looking at the birth charts of your near and dear ones and start relating it to the events, their personality, their experiences.
When predicting each and every aspect has to be carefully understood and amalgamated. Each planet has its own share of positive results and negative results during its dasha. But to know which will be more prominent comes only with experience.
While Judging a Mahadasha of a particular planet you have to see the following
- Planets own nature and behavior
- houses he owns
- houses he occupies
- depositing house
- houses he aspects from the place of deposition
- planets he is conjoined with
- aspections of other planets on him
- planet exaltation, debilitation, retrogation or combustion

Basic Principals to Judge by Mahadasha
Various matters has been assigned to each house and each house belong to different categories Quadrant (1,4,7,10), trine (1,5,9), Evil trine (6,8,12), Upchaya houses (3,6,10,11)
Depending on which houses the planet owns the effect in those matters can be judged. Lets say the planet owns Quadrants or Trine houses then the result of the Mahadasha will be positive specially if the planet is well placed. However lets says a planet owns quadrant and evil trine then the result would be mixed as it will give some positive result due to quadrant ownership and some negative result due to evil ownership but the balance whether it would be more negative or more positive would depend on how well placed and strong the planet is. Lets take a example for Aquarius ascendant in Mercury Mahadasha Mercury owns 5th (trine) house and 8th (evil trine house) and is deposited in 9th house in conjunction with Jupiter. It will give some good result due to 5th ownership and some bad result due to 8th ownership however because it is deposited in 9th house (Bhagya house) and in conjunct with a benefic it will give mostly good result. However if Mercury would have been deposited in 12th house then the result would have been entirely different and more negative.
Secondly while judging a Mahadasha we have to understand what is the planet Karaka of and what is the general behaviour of the planet. Because result would be seen very much in sync with the nature of the planet. A Moon as lord of 1st house deposited in 5th would give different result compared to Sun as lord of 1st house deposited in 5th. It is because they are Karakas of different things and their basic nature is very different.

Astrology – Mahadashas

Till now we have seen how planets influences our personality, our work, our family life, our happiness but now let us try and understand when these planets affect. To understand that we need to understand planetary periods or graha dashas. The main period is called Maha – Dasha (or Dasha), sub period is called Antar Dasha ( or Bhukti) and sub sub period is called pratyantra dasha. Depending on the position of a particular planet by its house, placement, aspection, nature – good and bad results can be predicted during the dasha of that planet.

In India there are total of 43 dasha system however only 2 dasha system has remained popular viz Ashottari(108 years) and Vimshottari(120 years). Out of these Vimshottari is the most popular dasha system. In the 120 years each planet is allotted time period and that time period the person goes through antar of all the other planets starting from the planet whose Mahadasha has become. Eg: If it is Sun Mahadasha then the first antar dasha would be Sun followed by Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus. The line up of planets is similar to the line up we spoke about in Chapter on Zodiac signs and Constellations. Similarly if it is Ketu Mahadasha the first antar dasha would be Ketu then Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury.

Planets                                 Mahadasha Period

Ketu                                      7 years

Venus                                   20 years

Sun                                        6 years

Moon                                    10 years

Mars                                      7 years

Rahu                                      18 years

Jupiter                                  16 years

Saturn                                   19 years

Mercury                               17 years

How to determine in which Mahadasha a person is born

For this Moon Sign or Nakshatra comes into play. Depending on which Nakshatra a person is born. The ruling planet of that Nakshatra becomes the Starting Mahadasha of the person. Now we know each Nakshatra is allotted 13deg 20mins, depending on moon position in the nakshatra the years remaining in the Mahadasha is decided. For eg: A person born in Ashwini Nakshatra when the Moon is in Aries the Mahadasha the person is born in will be Ketu as Ashwini is ruled by Ketu. Out of the 7 years how many years of Ketu Mahadasha is remaining will depend on the position of Moon in Ashwini Nakshatra. If it has just entered Ashwini Nakshatra then the person will have to go through full 7 years of Ketu Mahadasha. If it is almost at the end of Ashwini then maybe few months of Ketu Mahadasha will be remaining before Venus Mahadasha starts. Lets take a look at another example a person is born with Moon in Leo at 20deg. That means the person is born in Poorvaphalguni Nakshatra at 6deg 40mins. So the moon has travelled almost to the half point of Poorvaphalguni Nakshatra. This Nakshatra is ruled by Venus whose Mahadasha is for 20 years. So we can easily say that person is born with around 10 years of Venus Mahadasha remaining.

Astrology – Example Birth Chart 2

In the above example

1)      Judging by the Ascendant. In this particular example the ascendant is Gemini. Gemini represents witty, quick thinkers, loves to Mingle. It represents Dual nature. The Ascendant has three major planets Mercury the house lord, Saturn and Sun. Mercury being the house lord makes the person highly intelligent, however unlike Jupiter, Mercury does not give spiritual intelligence, it gives real world intelligence, practical intelligence. Makes the person good with multi tasking, good with communication. Sun and Saturn are both big planets so this makes one always aim for big things. This person will never settle for something small. Looking at the next planet how does Saturn affect the personality. What is Saturn – Saturn is routine work, workaholic, fear, anxiety, rules, boundaries. So this person would be very specific about the do’s and dont’s. This person would like their routine work, would not like sudden changes, would be very anxious and restless mentally. The presence of Sun would make this person responsible. He will not shy away from his responsibilities. Presence of Sun in ascendant would make this person bald at a very young age.

2)      Very strong combination in this horoscope is Gaj-Kesari Yog (Guru and Chan) together. Any house this yog is present it gives maximum benefit of that house. Whatever that house symbolises would be given to you in abundance. So in this horoscope we can see that the Gaj Kesari yog is formed in the 9th house. What does 9th house represent – 9th represents your luck (bhagya), spiritual/religious inclination, spiritual growth, long journeys. Having Gaj Kesari in 9th house will enhance all these qualities. But remember this person is predominantly a Mercury by nature also the lord of 9th house is sitting in close conjunction with Mercury – which gives real world practical understanding of things. So it is quite possible that this person may not be quite interested in the spiritual journey because it goes against its basic nature. However this person would be immensely lucky in all its pursuit and would have to take lot of long journeys. Also remember 9th house does not represent settling abroad it only represents long journey. For a person to settle abroad you also have to see the 12th house.

3)      Looking at the 2nd House. The lord is sitting with Guru forming Gaj Kesari. This position will give him a strong family, however Mars is deposited and it is debilitated. What does this mean. What is Mars – Mars is energy, force, fearlessness, anger. So when Debilitated Mars is sitting in the house of your family it defines the nature of your family. It means there would be lots of unnecessary rifts due to short temper. They will use their energy to keep this person close but through negative force. But due to strong position of moon despite all rifts the bond will not break.

This is a very good example for planetary conjunctions. How planet influence each other when we they are sitting together. Any further questions please feel free to write below.

Astrology – Example Birth Chart 1

Astrology like any other science is best understood only when you start seeing and understanding things practically. No matter how many books you read deciphering a birth chart will come only by studying birth chart constantly. Start by reading charts of your friends, families, familiar people. See if you are able to understand their behaviour, overall nature looking at the chart. Phases in life will be understood only after we learn about the dasha system. We will look into that in coming blogs. Today let’s just see a chart

Understanding the above birth chart
1) Lagna / Ascendant of this chart is Aquarius which is ruled by Saturn/Sani. There is no other planet in the lagna however Guru has 5th aspection on it and Mars 7th. Primarily the characterictics of the person would be of Saturn. The person would have a philosophical bent of mind. Would like a routine life and to achieve that would try and convert every action into some kind of system. He will get very uncomfortable with chaos. Such a person would always want to do or work in someway for the common people. Since Guru is also aspecting and is in 9th house he would use his philosophical understanding to help himself grow spiritually. With Mars aspection the person would be short tempered. Would like immediate results.
2) The sun or the soul of the chart is debilitated, hence the person would lack will power, however because of a strong ascendant would be hard working so he will try to achieve as much as possible. Also since the sun is debilitated name and fame becomes difficult for such person.
3) Rahu in 6th house. Rahu in any house means that you are attached with those things that the house represents. But with attachment it also gives dissatisfaction. 6th house is the house of job. So such a person would have good job but will never be satisfied completely. Also the lord of 6th is sitting behind in 5th. This person will not stay in a single job for too long. But as a positive effect the person will not have common sicknesses like cold, cough, etc.
4) The Karaka of this horoscope is Venus since venus is the lord of both center(4th house) and trine (9th house) sitting in 11th. This person would always be benefitted from Venus related work.
These are some basic pointers of this birth chart. We will try and understand some more once we understand the dasha system.

Astrology – Planets (Part5) Significators of Houses

Planets as Karaka for Houses

Certain planets are considered significators of certain houses. In such cases while you study the house lords and house tenants studying the significator also helps us reflect light on the overall understanding of the particular house. Below is the list of houses and their significators

1st House – Sun

2nd House – Jupiter

3rd House – Mars

4th House – Moon

5th House – Jupiter

6th House – Mars and Saturn

7th House – Venus

8th House – Saturn

9th House – Jupiter

10th House – Sun, Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn

11th House – Jupiter

12th House – Saturn

It is better if the Karaka of the house is connected with the house in the birth chart. But sometimes even if it is not connected it can help determine certain aspects of that house. For example even if Jupiter may not be connected with the 9th house in a persons birth chart but having a strong Jupiter will suggest a person’s spiritual inclination. Similarly for a male chart having weak venus may suggest more than one relationship outside of marriage.

Ofcourse these are just examples and there are many other factors like placement and associations which determine the effect. It is only when you start seeing horoscopes will you truly understand how everything comes together.

Astrology – Planets (Part 4)

Aspects of Planets

We know look into another important matter of Hindu Astrology which is planetary aspects. All planets aspects 100% on the 7th house from where they are deposited

-          Mars aspects 4th, 7th and 8th houses from the place of its deposition

-          Jupiter aspects 5th, 7th and 9th houses from the place of its deposition

-          Saturn aspects 3rd, 7th and 10th houses from the place of its deposition

Apart from these all other planets except Mars have 75% aspect on 4th and 8th house, all planets except Jupiter have 50% aspect on 5th and 9th house and all planets except Saturn have 25% aspect on 3rd and 10th house

Let’s take a look at the above example. In this chart Mars (Mang) is deposited in Scorpio aspects Ketu in Aquarius, Taurus and Gemini. Jupiter (Guru) aspects Sagittarius,  Ketu in Aquarius and Mercury, Sun in Aries. Saturn (Sani) aspects Capricorn, Taurus and Guru, Rahu in Leo. So we can see Ketu deposited in Aquarius which is the 8th house from ascendant is aspected by both Mars and Jupiter. So when we judge matters of this house we have to keep in mind the influence of both these planets too. Similarly Taurus which is the 11th house from ascendant is aspected by both Mars and Saturn so we have to consider them as well while making prediction.

General Rules

-          Rahu and Ketu do not aspect

-          Aspects by benefics(by nature and house owned) are always good

-          Aspects by malefics(by nature and house owned) are always bad

-          If a planet aspects its own house it always strengthens it whether it is benefic or malefic

Conjunction of Planets

Conjunction refers to the placement of two planets in the same sign. It affects the conjunct planets either positively or negatively. For example if Sun and Moon are together and specially if it is in close proximity to each other, it effects both soul and mind of that individual. As Sun represents the soul and moon the mind. Similarly if Sun and Mars are together as both are hot planets it makes the temperament of that person the house represents hot and short tempered. If sun and venus are together it makes the person very artistic. If sun and mercury are together it makes the person scholarly. So you can see different planetary conjunction can give different results.

Astrology – Planets (Part3)

Relationship of Planets

We have seen in brief the individual characteristics of each of the planets now let’s try and understand how they behave with each other

Planet        Friend                              Enemy                       Neutral

Sun            Moon, Mars, Jupiter            Venus, Saturn              Mercury

Moon          Sun, Mercury                     –                                 Mars, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn

Mars           Sun, Moon, Jupiter             Mercury                       Venus, Saturn

Mercury       Sun, Venus                       Moon                           Mars, Jupiter, Saturn

Jupiter        Sun, Moon, Mars               Mercury, Venus              Saturn

Venus         Mercury, Saturn                 Sun, Moon                    Mars, Jupiter

Saturn        Mercury, Venus                  Sun, Moon, Mars            Jupiter

As we can see that the relationship between planets are different in many cases for eg: Mercury considers sun as friend but in case of Sun it is neutral to mercury. These relationship are natural relationships which is common in all charts. Rahu and Ketu are enemies with Sun, Moon, Mars and Jupiter but comfortable with Venus, Mercury and Saturn. These relationship sometimes change depending on the position of planets in a person’s chart. For eg: if planets are sitting in each others house then even enemy planets become neutral to each other.. this is called as parivartan yog. We will learn more about these later. Right now let’s try and understand the basics first.

Exaltation and Debilitation of Planets

Planet                   Exaltation Sign(Deg of Highest Exal)       Debilitation Sign(Deg of deepest deb)

Sun                       Aries (10°)                                                           Libra (10°)

Moon                     Taurus (3°)                                                          Scorpio (3°)

Mars                      Capricorn (28°)                                                    Cancer (28°)

Mercury                  Virgo (15°)                                                          Pieces (15°)

Jupiter                   Cancer (5°)                                                         Capricorn (5°)

Venus                    Pieces (27°)                                                        Virgo (27°)

Saturn                   Libra (20°)                                                           Aries (20°)

A planet when is in a sign of Exaltation it is really strong and in its sign of debilitation is really weak. When the planet is preceding the sign in which it would be exalted the planet is called Uchchabhilashi or desiring for exaltation. A planet in its uchchabhilashi sign is also considered good. For example sun in pieces, Moon in Aries are considered good. Similarly the planet in the preceding sign before it becomes debilitated is called Neechabhilashi, this position is not considered good. A  planet is considered stronger than its own sign at its Mool Trikon sign.

Mool Trikon Sign of Planets

Sun: 0° to 20° in Leo

Moon: 4° to 30° in Taurus

Mars: 1° to 12° in Aries

Mercury: 16° to 20° in Virgo

Jupiter: 1° to 10° in Sagittarius

Venus: 0° to 5° in Libra

Saturn: 1° to 20° in Aquarius

Rahu: Aquarius

Ketu: Leo

Astrology – Planets (Part2)

Rahu and Ketu

In addition to the seven planets, the nodes of the Moon are very important in Vedic Astrology. The north node is called Rahu or snakes’s head; the south node is called Ketu or the snake’s tail.

Rahu and Ketu are regarded as secondary or shadowy planets. Astronomically, they represent the points at which the moon’s orbit crosses the ecliptic. At these places at which the moon crosses the point of the sun’s orbit, eclipses can occur. The lunar nodes show the times when the solar and lunar forces obstruct each other or cancel each other out. They are very sensitive points and cause repercussions in the total fields of planetary forces.

Rahu and Ketu are bith malefic in nature. Rahu is ‘discontent incarnate’, ever dissatisfied’ and ‘attachment’. Ketu is ‘fanaticism incarnate’, ‘obstinate’, ‘courageous’ and ‘detachment’.

The best houses for Rahu and Ketu is 3rd, 6th and 9th. Out of this Rahu in 3rd and Ketu in 9th is considered the best position

Rahu and Ketu since are only nodes and do not have any physical body. They imbibe the qualities of the planets they are conjoined with and the attributes of the house they tenant. If the house tenanted is good and the planet also good (inherently, as well as by ownership), the results will be excellent. But if the house tenanted is evil and the planet co-joining also evil, unfavourable results will follow.

As per my experience. Whichever house Rahu is placed it creates strong attachment but with dissatisfaction. It creates insecurities and fears in matters pertaining to that house. Rahu indicates cash money, under the table work, hidden things.

Ketu on the other hand indicates loss or limitation, indicates stubbornness of views. However it is good for matters pertaining to writing, astrology, frequency work, paper. Ketu born are research minded but nervous in nature.

Astrology – Houses

What are houses?

As we have learnt earlier there are 12 zodiac signs in a birth chart. These 12 signs forms the 12 houses. The first house is determined by the rising sign – the ascendant or lagna. The sign next to it will be the 2nd house and so on..

Let’s look at the characteristics of these houses and what each one of them signify

First House

The 1st house represents your – self, your personality, the way you look, your attitude towards things, your will power (this also depends on the position of sun in your horoscope), composition of body, temperament, mannerism. Among parts of the body the head is governed by this house. The person with strong ascendant is capable to achieve name, fame and success during the dasha of the ascendant by sheer hardwork. Any malefic planet (we will learn about planets later) like Mars/ketu can cause hurt in the head region or some perennial issues.

Second House

The 2nd house represents your extension, your family, finance, wealth. It also represents one’s attitude towards family, possession, power. Its represents one’s speech. 2nd However has some negative qualities. It is one of the Maraka house and when combined with 6th, 8th or 12th house can cause multiplicity of problems. But we will understand this later. For right now it is important to learn what each house represents, what are the things one can benefit during the dasha of lords of this house. Among body parts second house represents the throat, and above throat area.

Third House

The 3rd house represents your further extensions your younger siblings, brother and sisters, your courage, short travels, your communication skills, contacts, one’s utilization of knowledge. Person with strong 3rd house is often good with communication and can easily make many friends and contacts due to this ability. A malefic planet sitting in 3rd house may not give the person happiness from younger siblings. Among body parts 3rd house represents neck, shoulders, arms and the upper part of the chest.

Fourth House

The 4th house represents your mother, your assets like house, land, property, vehicles, etc. Dwelling properties, as well as others. For students just exposed to astrology this may come as a question that if 2nd house represents our family why does 4th represent mother. 2nd house is used to judge your family in general sense, whether one had good family life. Whereas, 4th house is used to judge only the characteristics of your mother, your relationship with her, her nature in general sense. And can also be used to judge her health issues too. 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th form the Kendra and hence the lord of these houses are considered very good.

Fifth House

The 5th house is the house of creativity, child, love affair, higher education, risk taking. One can judge the characteristics of children, if one will have any children, boy or girl, quality of higher education one may receive, whether it will be smooth or with obstacles, one’s attitude towards affairs, creative expression it can be in any form not necessarily in arts only. The lord of 5th and 9th are considered very positive. But if malefics are deposited in 5th house generally means that the higher education of that person may not be very good or with hurdles. And the person may have to take external support for child bearing. One the other hand if the house and the lord is strong the person will be bestowed upon with good children and good education

Sixth House

The 6th house is one of the evil trines, including 8th and 12th. This house represents sickness, loan, enemies, litigation, court cases, servants. Among the negative things it also represents one’s job. It is very important for the 6th house to be strong for one to succeed in professional environment. All diseases arising due to wind, bile and phlegm are to be judged from this house. When the 6th house is weak a person most likely will have allergic diseases or weak stomach. Malefic planets in evil trine houses give better results than benefic planets, as they increase the negativity of the house.

Seventh House

The 7th house represents the house of partner. It is one of the important houses as the planet deposited in this house directly aspects the ascendant. (We will learn about aspection in the next chapter but as a rule all planets aspects the seventh house except rahu and ketu). This is partner house, partner means life partner as in husband and wife or business partner or boss in any cases these partner plays a very important role in one’s life. So it is good to have amicable and strong 7th. Success in one’s married life is judged by this house. Characteristics of the partner can also be judged from this house.

Eight House

The 8th house is one of the evil trine houses, and it represents longevity of a person. If 8th house is disturbed it causes issues like aches and pains, piles, hormonal issues, urinary diseases, depression, mental distress, delays, accidents, fracture, fear, etc. This house is considered for hereditary gains or sudden gains. This house is good for judging a person’s interest for occult sciences, under the ground things. This house is taken into consideration for politician.

Ninth House

The 9th house is the house of Bhagya your luck and destiny. It represents your spiritual/religious inclination, charity work, long journey, younger sibling of your spouse (3rd to 7th). It is one of the most positive house, a strong house makes one very lucky, pious, socially conscious and spiritually inclined. It is the house of dharma. It is a house for teaching, guidance and publishing. Planets deposited in 9th aspect 3rd house, hence depending on benefic aspection of male or female planets the person will have brother or sister.

Tenth House

The 10th house is the house of your karma. It states your direction in life. It is also the house of your father (7th to 4th), his characteristics and status. When the lord of 9th (bhagya) conjoins with the lord of 10th (karma) it is very auspicious and forms Raj Yog. Your 10th house is very important is judging one’s line of work, it is the house of business. It is the house of progress, responsibility and authority. It is house to judge success with one’s own efforts. If malefic planets are sitting in this house, it causes issues with father.

Eleventh House

The 11th house is the house of gain, fulfilment of desires. It represents once income, elder siblings, general affluence and prosperity. All gains are to be judged with this house. For example if a person asks you about child bearing you have to judge it with a combination of 2nd, 5th and 11th – as 5th is for child bearing, 2nd because your family is growing, and 11th because its fulfilment of desire and gain. So 11th is considered in any situation which benefits a person.

Twelfth House

The 12th house is the house of Moksha, loss, foreign travels – away from birthplace, medical expense, beyond control expenses, prison, hospitalization, difference of opinion, stubbornness, sexual enjoyment. It is one of the evil trine. A person with strong 12th house is often seen to have benefitted in foreign land, for if the person does not travel then all the negative impact can be seen.
